Resume Keywords for ATS: How to Find and Use Them Honestly

ResumeChecker Team Published 2026-10-14

Applicant tracking systems and recruiters both search resumes for terms taken from the job posting. Matching those terms makes your resume easier to find, but only if the terms are true for you and appear in a way that makes sense.

1. Read the posting for repeated terms

Highlight the tools, methods, certifications and role names that appear more than once or in the requirements list. These are the terms the employer cares about most. Paste the posting into the Job match tab in the ResumeChecker builder to see which ones your resume does not mention yet.

2. Use the exact wording where it is true

If the posting says 'Azure DevOps' and you have used it, write 'Azure DevOps', not just 'Microsoft tools'. Include both the full name and the acronym once, such as 'Continuous Integration (CI)'.

3. Put keywords in context

Do not only list them in Skills. Use them inside achievement bullets that show how you used the skill. A bullet that says 'Automated regression tests with Selenium and Java' is stronger than the word Selenium in a list.

4. Do not stuff or hide keywords

Repeating terms unnaturally, adding skills you do not have, or hiding white text are easy to spot and can disqualify you. A focused skills list of the relevant tools is better than a long list of everything you have ever touched.

5. Tailor, do not copy

Keep one strong base resume and adjust the headline, summary and top bullets for each application. Small, honest edits are enough.

Checklist

• Terms taken from the posting's requirements. • Exact names for tools you really use. • Keywords inside bullets, not only in Skills. • No stuffing or hidden text. • A tailored headline and summary per role.
